Using Reaper/DAW/PC3X: Midi Question

Advertising

MessageAuthor

I'm trying to use Reaper as a midi-based sequencer with my Kurzweil PC3X and an old Tascam US-224 DAW. (I've already used Reaper successfully to record the audio output from the PC3X.) I successfully record the MIDI information from the PC3X. And I can play it back too, driving the PC3X, just as I would expect. However, when I look at the Reaper docs, they imply that I can treat a MIDI-based track and a WAV-based track in the same way. That implies to me that if I move the volume or pan sliders in Reaper while I play my recorded MIDI track, that will pass volume and pan information to the PC3X. But it doesn't work. I presume it should, otherwise how can I do mixdowns with (say) automated control of the PC3X voices with Reaper? I know I'm overlooking something elementary here -- but what? Thanks for any help .... Regards, EJB

RE: Using Reaper/DAW/PC3X: Midi Question

Reaper's track faders don't send MIDI data when moved. But you can have knobs on the mixer channels / track headers to do so. It reads as if it's a lot of work, but it's not that hard: - load an instance of ReaControlMIDI on one of the tracks. - set the MIDI channel to the channel you want to control - tick the "enable" box in the Control Change" area. Volume and pan (and pitch) should be configured by default, otherwise choose them from the dropdowns. - click on the volume fader handle - click on the "Param" box on top of the plugin's gui and tick "Show in track controls - do the same with the Pan parameter. - Save this setting as an FX-Chain (you do this from the FX-Chain window's FX menue) The knobs will be shown on the Mixer channel strips when "Show FX parameters when size permits" is ticked in the menue you get when clicking on the question mark on the master channel. On track headers you only need to make them bigger to see the knobs. - Now load this FX chain on every track you need MIDI volume and pan control on. You'll have to change the MIDI channel accordingly. Maybe you also want to save a track template, I'd save one with all (16?) tracks you need to work with the Kurzweil as well as one with only one track for quick adding a track to the arrangement. Btw. you can also load patches by name from ReaControl (and have a knob on the tracks for it). To let Reaper know the names it needs a file listing them. Reaper loads it's own *.reabank files as well as Cakewalk Instrument Definition files. I am quite positive you can find one of the latter flavour for your Kurzweil.

Golly, gofer, that's going to take me a little while to look over and implement ... but I can see that once it's done I can create a template and I won't have to do it again .... I appreciate your very rapid response. I'll try to remember to post back after I've got it working .... Regards, EJB

Thanks, gofer, that does indeed work just as you described. It does seem odd to me, though, that there is no way of assigning the volume and pan to the main sliders on a MIDI track .... But then I'm no expert on this stuff. Appreciate the rapid and comprehensive reply. Regards, EJB BTW, you were right about .ins files for the PC3X -- I already had one I'd found out in Internet land.
