Quick heads up. I just picked up my August edition of SoS and there is a massive article (6 pages) on Reaper 3 in the On test section. I'm just about flying out of the country so I won't have time to read it fully and give you further info but it looks like a great review with some very positive feedback! Well done Cockos and big thanks to SoS for such an in depth article of our favourite DAW.
By chance I bought that issue today at London Heathrow (on my way back home from Canada). Yes, the review is indeed very favorable. It is written by Mike Senior, and among other things he says "I've been using both Steinberg Cubase and Apple Logic for many years, but if you forced me to work exclusively with any single software package, I'd choose Reaper any day". The review taught me things I didn't know... great piece on Reaper. EDIT: Note, this is the August issue. The soundonsound.com web site boasts that the July issue is now on sale...
A bit off topic but hopefully a quick answer: I'm a newb when it comes to home recording but am learning loads with Reaper and courtesy of yep and these great forums. Because of this thread, I almost impulse-bought a 2-yr subscription to SOS today. Realizing it was an impulse because of the Reaper article I stopped myself and realized I could buy another mic or gadget instead of the magazine. But perhaps Sound on Sound is worth the price if it's valuable for learning what techniques others are using for digital recording and mixing. How worthwhile is a subscription?
Personally, SoS is my favorite recording mag. Their reviews almost always come across as honest, no BS reviews. There is almost always useful ideas and tips scattered throughout every issue. It's one of the few mags I actually read cover to cover. D PS No, I don't work for SOS... wish I did... ;)
SOS is pretty much the only industry mag worth buying, IMO Unlike most of the others, they don't need to suck up to software/hardware companies to get the advertising bucks.... so they can write honest reviews.
SOS is a great mag. How is it that the August edition is out? I subscribe and only have the July issue!! Anyhoo congrats on the great review. The Dev's definitely deserve it.
This is a pretty thorough article, just a bit of a shame that he doesn't mention the awesome SWS or Xenakios extensions and their added functionality. But ... if you want a quotable quote from the article ... I've been using both Steinberg Cubase and Apple Logic for many years, but if you forced me to work exclusively with any single software package I'd choose REAPER any day. Love to see that one on the Cockos web site! :)
