I'd really appreciate feedback on the sonics of this mix. It's the first one with my new yammies.Probably shouldn't have switched in the middle of a project but I got a good deal on them.

First of all.. another beauty.. what a great song. the mix sounds great on my mr5's. For my taste it could move a little more air and be a touch punchier on the bottom. Not that its defecient, just my preference. the mix is a tasty balance, and super clear and defined. The performances are inspiring.

my impression would be a little thicker on the bottom. again, it really did sound good.. i turned it up a bit and for my taste I would like it to have a bit more "punch" on the bottom. But i've always liked heavier stuff, so it may just be a oddball quirk of mine.

As always an excellent performance but I had to turn up my system quite a bit to get a decent volume.I think you have plenty of Headroom to play with so could lift a few things to get more punch. The drums seem a little over compressed and with the spare headroom you could get some more out of them I think,a little more sparkle on the top-end and bottom end of them.

I love it. Another great song. I'm possibly saying what I've said previously but I find your music has a fresh and uplifting sound. Also, it's got a hint of Nick Kershaw (an underrated genius) about it. Pete

RE: First Mix On HS 80m's

Well my comments are going to pretty much echo what has already been said. 1st'ly another great song and arrangement really 1st class. I also have hs80m monitors in quiet a large room but with no accoustic treatment at all, so I don't feel confident about giving others tips on how to fix their mix. However, when comparing your track with others I also think it could do with some extra punch from the bass & drums, maybe like sheppola said, a little less compression on the drums would let them breath more ( unless of course that very tight drum sound is intentional ). The bass sound is really good it just has to come up in the mix relitive to the drums. Everything else sounds good on my system. In fact would mind sharing how you processed the bass, its an area of mixing i'm really strugling with and any pionters would be really helpfull. As i said my listening environment isn't the best so please take or leave these comments. Great work Cheers

RE: First Mix On HS 80m's

Thanks Stratman and Wolffman. I've taken all the comment and decompressed the snare and punched up the bass. I',ve also added a bit of presence here and there.I'll post the new mix once it's done. As far as the bass goes, it starts with my Ken Smith CR5G which a fabulous instrument. Very even all the way up the board and the electronics are top notch. I scooped a bunch of 360 hz with a 1973 and then added some definition at 1.6 hz with another 1973. Compressed with blockfish and then scooped out a bit at 137 hz with DDMF with a small Q.I looked at how the low end was with Schope and rolled of low rumble with a hpf at 20 hz with another DDMF and finally sidechained to the kick for 3-5 db gain reduction on every kick hit. The bass in the chorus has balls to the wall distortion on it via gearbox and a very wide cut at 278 hz via DDMF and is also sidechained to the kick. Thanks again for your valuable feedback. # 1 lesson learned...Do not change monitors in the middle of a project!!!

Hey Henge I can offer no comments on the mix as my girl is asleep. Alas, she can offer no comments at all, though I will definately play it for her tomorrow. But the song, the song is just great. Man, lots of creativity, all over the place. I especially like the backing parts under the verses, that sort of wobbly vocal part -really nice. Great intro -grabbed my attention. I just kept wanting the hear more of the chorus... and you delivered at the end! Nice harmonic movement from the verse into the chorus. Your choices lifted me right into it. Its tough, at least for me, to pick transitional structures (especially harmonic) that have this effect. Great vocals as well. I'm with quietroom --inspiring. I look forward to your tunes. Its always a pleasure listening in. Thanks. snskrt

Great production. It keeps you interested from start to finish. The only gripe I have echos the above, I can't understand what you're saying in many of the lyrics. Great song though.

I really appreciate the comments guys. I'll be remixing this one next week. Sodekirk, I don't think it's your monitors, I'm just having a hard time adjusting to the new Yammies. I'm away at a hockey tournament for my son on the weekend and I'm going to rip this puppy apart when I get back and post the results when I'm done.
