Event ASP8 - Blown Tweeter or Faulty HF amp?

Hi all I have pair of Event ASP8s, one of which is faulty. So I have just bought a second pair (again, with one faulty) so that I can put the two good ones together and store the others for spare parts, etc. I was told by the seller that his faulty one had a blown tweeter. When I plugged that one in, within less than 30 seconds the speaker started to smoke. I wasn't expecting that! Anyhow, onto my question.... Is there an easy-ish way for me to tell whether it is definitely the tweeter that is blown and not the HF amp or something else that is faulty? I've already done the obvious... I took the tweeter from one of my existing speakers and put it into his faulty one. When I switched on, there was interference style noise coming from the tweeter, so I switched it off straight away fearing that if it is the amp or something that is faulty I might blow the working tweeter, which wouldn't be good. If there are any tests I can perform, it would be great to find out at this stage whether the amp is ok or not. Cheers Max

What a coincidence. I checked a pair of these just a couple of weeks ago. Tweeters didn't blow, but one of the amps in one of the speakers was oscillating. I was very surprised the tweeter didn't blow immediately, as the owner already switched them on and off a few times...

Did some digging, and found a to the Event ASP8 service manual. These have been around for a while (since '05 by my reckoning), and I've read some stories about the circuit components breaking down. Can't say with certainty, but worth a look. In my experience with monitors both passive and active, if the speaker craps out, the amp's thermal protection should kick in; if the amp fries, any replacement driver that goes in is toast.

Tweeters don't make noises without an amp... Repairing the amp could be as simple as replacing a couple of caps or replacing the LM3886 power amp IC. The part isn't expensive (less than 10$), but the expertise is. And opening some of the Event monitors isn't straight forward either. Doesn't the shop were you bought them has a repair center? Or the importer?

RE: Event ASP8 - Blown Tweeter or Faulty HF amp?

Hi again Thanks for the replies. It was an ebay purchase so there is no repair option unfortunately. I've just got to decide whether to keep or ask for a refund. So, if anyone knows of a non-tech easy way to test whether the HF amp is working or not, I'd love to hear it. Is there a way I can measure the ??? at the terminals that connect to the tweeter? Could I maybe get a mega-cheap tweeter or any other type of tweeter/anything(!) to connect which would emulate having the tweeter there? Any other ways to tell? Believe it or not, I am happy to accept that there is no easy way to tell if the HF amp (or some other component) is knackered. But I just want to check I'm not missing anything before deciding what to do. Oh, and one last thing. Audio seems to play through the woofer with no problems (I tried playing music through it with noting connected to the tweeter terminals). Many thanks Max
