How to put Vocals down

Advertising

MessageAuthor

Hi guys, Can anyone give me some tips on recording vocals?. I have completely finished my first song on the digi001, but just need to add the vocals. What are the tricks to achieving good vocals ie: dual tracks with slap delay on second, what plugins to use?. Any help would be appreciated. Cheers.

A well trained and talented vocalist, good sound room, great vocal mic that matches the singer and preamp., a killer preamp. and quality converter. See the Vocal Chain thread for more info on hardware setups. Allen

RE: How to put Vocals down

Hello! Here's how I do it. Since I am a vocalist, maybe this might help to spark some ideas for you. I start by recording my vocal track using a Stedman mic directly into the 001. Then I add compression using the LA2A, for reverb, I usually use Dverb or Trueverb. I keep a nice hot signal going in DRY. Hopefully this helps. Good luck to you! PS. Don't be afraid to experiment!!!

RE: How to put Vocals down

since this is going i have a question: in books and other reference materials (internet) I always see that the singer should be about 6 inches away from a pop filter, if used, which is an inch or 2 from the mic. Now i know i dont have one of those badass 800 dollar mics, but for the one i do use (AKG D2300S) if I stood 6 inches away from it, my voice would never make it the 001! in other words I have to sing up on the mic for it to come through. Am i missing something, or is it just the mic? my usual vocal chain is mic-> -> input 5 and/or 6 on 001 -> pt compressor -> waves Q8 eq. I usually use a compressor only to make it a bit louder in the mix, and on the provocal i have a touch of reverb, delay, a little deesser and some eq. is this similar to anyone else out there?

Well, I do agree that a good outboard mic pre amp is wonderful. The pre amp in the Digi001 is more than sufficiant. You might want to play around with mic placement. I tend to "eat" the mic, but with experience you will find the right way to play with the mic and work it the best way to enchance and capture your very best vocal performance. The best thing to do is to spend time and record yourself using different mic placement, pugins, etc. to find out what works best for you. Once you have found that it will make your sessions run much more smooth. Remember, every singer is different. Find what works for you then work on enhancing that. Good luck to you! Let me know if I can be of any more help..

While the preamps in the 001 are tolerable, a vast improvement can be had by suing an outboard preamp AND A-D converter. Thsi combination will yield vast improvements ove rthe quality of the stock 001. Hope this is helpful.
