reatune broken lines?

MessageAuthor

Trying to get a handle on this plugin, but it doesnt look like its registering the whole track and its somewhat confusing. This is a picture of what it looks like. Basically looks like broken lines as opposed to the whole line.

RE: reatune broken lines?

The same as in a drawing of a wave form, the blank spots are where there is no sound. This is something I really liked about Cakewalk's V-Vocal; you could see the drawing of the pitch super imposed on a drawing of the wave form.

RE: reatune broken lines?

Hmm. Maybe my understanding of this is flawed but it has never affected my use of Reatune or V-Vocal. Perhaps once the clip drops below a certain level it no longer registers? I'll shut up now and hopefully someone who knows what they're talking about will chime in.

RE: reatune broken lines?

Happens to me too.. Basically, you have 2 possible reasons. The first one is that there's suddenly 2 sounds going on.. Reatune being monophonic, it just stops tracking. BTW, if you sing really loud (like as loud as you possibly can), and suddenly a lot of rasp/voice breaking sounds show up, that's enough to mess it up. Annd, also, if reatune "thinks" you just switched octaves.. Sometimes, when there's a lot of modulation in your voice, reatune gets lost and just jumps a couple octaves. Just check a few octaves up or down to make sure this isn't the case... There's an option somewhere in reatune to avoid octave jumps, I think... Hope this helps :)

Take a look an octave up, sometimes notes just show up there. That said, there are times when notes just don't register. I had a screaming raspy singer (?) in last month and Reatune did not deal with it at all.

RE: reatune broken lines?

I've had this happen as well. I dislike it. With smooth - near perfect pitch performers, the lines are smoother. And less broken. Even with a world-class vocal chain on the input and the performance in a vocal booth, I've had breaks, so I know that Reatune is not breaking the lines due to poor signal. I do think that Reatune has a problem or difficulties when the vocalist has a lot of overtones or harmonic richness. This is similar to what others are saying about the "rasp" in voices. Sometimes Reatune does jump up an octave. That's annoying, but when I draw a manual tuning line across the main note and even drawing across the breaks, the result still sounds smooth. Strangly sometimes the note does not sounds smooth... not sure what why not. Vocal tuning takes time and patience. Ultimately, while I would love to have Melodyne-esque enhancements available in Reaper, I do lean more heavily towards the school of thought that the recording should be captured cleanly and correctly. Taking the time for an extra take can be more valuable in the long run, than tuning a poor vocal performance. I know that sometimes that's not always available, but I try to keep that perspective when tracking and then editing.
