New 940 and a few questions

MessageAuthor

hello and welcome to the joys of 940 ownership! firstly, when you engage overdrive, depress your clutch-see if it makes any difference as this is what youre supposed to do. secondly, Volvo instrument binnacles are not the most reliable, check out your local breakers for a new binnacle or just swap the clocks. thats all i can help you with as im not a diesel person-sorry! good luck! regards cavey

RE: New 940 and a few questions

Hi, Congratulations on your new acquisition!! I just love the creativity of masking tape!! The suggestion of depressing the clutch is not required. When I had a 240 and 740 with the 4+OD gearbox I found that easing off the accelerator when switching on or off OD was nice and smooth.. Volvo Temp senders (on the petrol 900's etc) are 2 wired. It is likely that either the sender maybe faulty or the connection is poor. Once you find the sender remove and refit the connector a few times.. It can also be the gauge has left the building.. Des. . . ;)

RE: New 940 and a few questions

The temperature sender looks ok, the resistance is changing as the engine warms up, so I'll try and get the instrument cluster out next and see if I can see anything there. I've managed to get the tailgate lock working - it was a combination of a stiff, corroded handle and adjustment of the linkage rod. I also managed to find out why the rear wiper didn't work last night - the whole motor is missing! Aslo noticed another problem, no reversing lights!. I'll check the bulbs and then have a look at the switch, I assume it will be on the side of the gearbox somewhere? Regards TFB

RE: New 940 and a few questions

Think I've worked it out. If the unconnected pipe you describe is the narrow white tube in the middle of the photo with a screw in the end then it is a vacuum tubing. The same general area of the engine is pictured in the thumbnail below; the yellow dots show the inlet manifold with the take-off to the EGR system, the vacuum tube and the nipple on the EGR system to which it attaches. If this is correct then it could be that the system has been removed on your car, the metalwork is still in place on mine. If I've got it wrong then completely disregard anything said. P.S. the high torque bolt is on the damper not idler. john

RE: New 940 and a few questions

Very interesting, thanks for the tips and advice Jor. I'll definately have a chat with a Volvo dealer about the manual and have a good trawl of the forums when I get a few free hours. The wires are the same colour as in your snap (blue and blue/yellow) so they must be for the same thing, but the switch has also been removed on mine! Yep, that's the vacuum pipe, but I don't have the aluminium casting and pipe work over the top of the rocker cover as in your piccy, is your's the D24TIC? as mine has no inter-cooler (quite possible it has been reomved, judging by all the other bits that have been taken off and discarded!) I'm in Cambridgeshire, but you're more than welcome to head over and see the application of a 6ft scaffolding bar on the pulley nut! I've ordered up filters and such like and with any luck (kids and weather behaving) I'll do the basics this weekend. The Timing belt will have to wait a few a weeks. That's a good idea about doing a guide for the brakes. This weekend I'll see if the discs and pads need replacing or if I can get away with replacing the fluid. Regards TFB
