I have a T5 engine that i am going to put in my car but i would really like to get it looking as new as possible before i do, but does anybody know what chemicals are used in cleaning? I work for a chemicals company so will probably have the right stuff here. I have spoken to a couple to a couple of metal treatment companies but as soon as i mention aluminium engine they put the phone down.
I just use the cheapo engine cleaner what you get in pound shops...got a whole load of it in my shed..does clean the engine quite well..let it soak in and agitate with a firm brush..

Thanks for the replies, i am very familiar with gunk and more recently jizer but i am looking for something a little more aggresive to take the block as close to new as possible. Even thinking about shotblasting and relacquering it.
Hi I love your profile pic! Three main degreasers: Phosphoric acid - dilute concentration i.e w/w 15% Sodium Hydroxide - very common, w/w10% Very common and green now - Citric Acid, made from oranges - try Finish line, it's a top super smelling orange based degreaser. You could also take the engine to a jet steaming place. These bring everything off at high pressure. Tendancy to get water EVERYWHERE though!
