Alesis 32 mixer and Behringer headphone amp

Advertising

MessageAuthor

I just got my Behringer 4600 headphone amp and I'm kind of confused about how to hook it up right. I'm using my Alesis Studio 32 mixer to monitor my tracks from protools. So, all my sends from the Digi 001 are into the TAPE INs on the Alesis. Anyway, what I want to do is be able to have 4 seperate headphone mixes going to the Behringer headphone amp. I guess this would kind of be like having 4 different stage monitor mixes. How do I do this? If any of you have any experience with this, please let me know. Thanks.

I've actually got the same board and headphone amp you have. They way I have my setup is to actually use the Digi 001 as way of routing to the headphone amp. This way you can run mixes to the headphones when tracking and doing overdubs. Overdubs require hearing back previously recorded material so you're going to have to go out of the Digi at some point. The way you have your's setup right now is bascially using the Alesis as middleman which you don't need. Consider the 4600 as a headphone mixer as well as an amp. It has four discrete channels that can also receive a stereo feed. To do four discrete mixes you take an output off the Digi and go into the Aux in on each channel of the 4600 (there a four separate channels), thus giving you four discrete mixes. What I've found is easier is when working with a band try to get everyone on the same mix that way I don't have to use a lot of the outs on the Digi. If someone is picky I give them their own mix but most of the time they won't complain as long as they can hear everything equally. If you have to give more than one mix during tracking you could just use the Aux sends on the Alesis to go to the 4600. Then you will have to send a feed from the Digi to alesis when doing overdubs. The first way requires less routing (especially if you have a patchbay) and less hassle. I don't like to have to reroute a bunch of cables during a session. Hope this helps a bit.

Furman makes an 8-mono/4 stereo distribution system that makes it easy to do: Perhaps this can serve as a model for your own configuration, using little mini-mixers...
