YO Citi I feel you man, this is a much needed post. I've been really procastinating in starting a post like this. I haven't recorded now in six months because of whatever reason, however there are several different things that make the recording of a hiphop/r&b track different from a rock track. I've learned an abundance of technical things from the DUC that are the same across musical platforms, however when it really comes down to it (in studio) HipHop is its own animal. Really engaging question like how many times are you recording your hooks?, Are you two tracking?, How many of us are using samples?, How and what are you guys using compression on?.. OR Who are your favorite HipHop producers and why? I think we all have had enough of the favorite rapper thing, but we could take it a step farther and discuss how these rappers are being miced, and what kind of reverb or chorus effect is being used on their vocals. Are we using R&B with HipHop and how? How many Adlib tracks are we using, and what are we doing to the Adlibs? How many of us play an instrument, and do we think it would help or hurt our production sytles? Sory Citi just got carried away. Like I said I really procrastinated on creating a post like this. Let me start: Where are most of you guys recording your vocals, and what if any attempt have you guys made in trying to sound proof the booth?

Who are your favorite HipHop producers and why? Dr. Dre most of all. i also very much appreciate Primo's sampling chops and groove.. and neptunes' experimental sounds and rhythmic excitement. I think we all have had enough of the favorite rapper thing, but we could take it a step farther and discuss how these rappers are being miced, and what kind of reverb or chorus effect is being used on their vocals. yo, my fav is Talib Kweli. i have no idea how his voice gets recorded thou. be curious to know thou fo sure, so anyone who does, holla one. Where are most of you guys recording your vocals, and what if any attempt have you guys made in trying to sound proof the booth? i use one room for control room and recording. hell, that's how massive attack (i kno it's not hiphop, so shhh. well, they did technically do that 1 collab w/ mos def) records their ish even. i find that after having hushed my computer throu tweaks, it's a quiet room. oh, and kick out anyone who's not actually being recorded.

how do you guys record and mix vocals? rec-ing, i use either a Shure Beta 58A or Neumann TLM 103 or Rode NTK (but didn't bring it with me this summer), and anywhere from 6-12 inches away, depending on what sounds best, and generally straight on. mixing, i generally mm.. put get a compressor on it (LA-2A or 1176), then RenEQ (roll off real lows, maybe slightly nudge up around 2K and 15K+ shelf), then SuperTap 2 (very very short delay, just to thicken). sometimes will sprinkle a lil' Antares Tube on it. how do you guys do it? also, do any y'all know how the very best polished (in terms of engineered) albums (like Dre's 2001 or Xzibit's Man vs. Machine) get that sound and blend on vocals?

Although i am not in hiphop myself i think this is a good idea. Here you can talk about the hiphopstuff more detailed without possible annoyances by other people. On the other hand ..... what i like about the DUC is all the different sides of everything. Different people, styles, equipment, purpose for your rig etc. For now i just say: Have fun, and may the hip be hopped...
RE: Re: HIP HOP Mini-Duc - Post your Hip Hop Related Question Here!
CITI !!!!! You forgot to mention blunts!!! lol That is, in my humble experience, a ubiquitous part of recording rap n hiphop... at least round these parts!!! I do some hiphop here in atlanta when I can get it. Small time mostly, but it helps my bottom line for sure, and its fun to record too. Most of my folks come in with their own beats though, so I dont know a lot about the rest of it really. Maybe I will post some of my work sometimes:) Good idea man,... I look forward to following this thread.
RE: Re: HIP HOP Mini-Duc - Post your Hip Hop Related Question Here!
Does anyone know what Dre uses to make his kicks sound so tight? They always seem to have a lot of punch too. What about snares? Any suggestions on what to use to get a nice phatt sound with some decent snap to it?
