Every other DAW software I've used work this way, I'm still not used to having to press 'shift' to add point, even after 2+ years using Reaper... Pretty please? [edit]Posted in the FR forum:

I find the 'single click to add a point' absolutely awkward. Too much undoing inserted envelope nodes when all I wanted was just select an item... A doubleclick option would be nice. +1 Another good thing to have would be a modifier with which we could drag a segment left/right (only), like we can now drag it up/down. That way we wouldn't need to select both points. And modifiers to restrict movement to one direction.

Probably a lost cause, but I really, I mean really, need my double click feature. So, who do I have to beg/pay/do-impossible-to-write-here-sexual-favor to?

Double-click is a bit less precise though. When you shift-click(my preferred method btw) or single click, you can't accidentally shift the newly created envelope point around so much. In fact, I'd even like there to be an action so I can further separate point creation from point movement, because with an action I won't have selected the point either. Probably a matter of getting used to it. In Protools I have to CTRL+click(using the Smart Tool) to create single envelope points by hand. Your synapse-rewiring is just a little more.
RE: Option to double click to add point to automation line.
I was just thinking about this yesterday when working with some automation... I was like "Why the heck doesn't REAPER have an option to add points with double click ... ?". Sure enough, pretty much every other DAW has this. It's a very small feature but it improves the quality of the software sooo much. I think REAPER has too many "weird" things that just makes it look less pro in the eyes of the pro... not that I'm a pro but still. Also things like why you hold down SHIFT to temporarily disable Snap to Grid when working with most items and stuff, but for the time selection you have to hold down CTRL to temporarily disable Snap to Grid. Would make more sense to have the same key to work for EVERY situation wouldn't it.. :>
