The cleanliness is purely down to the fuel. There is a threaded fiting there that you could try tightening a little. Failing that, one of the fittings or pipes could be cracked. Undo and check if tightening doesen't cure it.
I have a Haynes so it sounds like I just need to unbolt the fuel pump & filter cradle then disconnect the power & fuel lines? When I disconnect the fuel lines does a lot of fuel start pouring out or only a little? Are the fuel lines flexible? Does the cradle drop down 6" or so after unbolting to make access easier? Should there be rubber grommets over those connections? I might be imaging this but it almost looks like they have been burnt off!?
I can't advise if the car is safe to drive on not as I cannot inspect it but following is info on fuel filter change. Just watch out for tight unoins and fittings on the filter. I removed complete pump / filter away from car to change it. I used a golf tees to block the fuel pipes on the car. ivor940
Hi Sorry about the golf tee info. I don't play golf but the previous owner of my '92 car did. I used a tee for the forward pipe but I think I used a 1/4 drive extension or drill bit for the larger aft pipe. Hope everything worked out all right. ivor940
There is probably some variations in the pipes. I have a late 92 940GL with the 230FB engine. With the smaller fuel pipe running to the engine (even though you don't even need to plug the pipe) it would be quite hard because there is one of those round connection fittings so you couldn't really ram anything into the hole very easily. To give any future readers an idea of the flow from the larger fuel tank pipe ... I would say you would lose about a 1 litre of petrol every 10 seconds ... so you have to be quick to plug it up!!
