How to change the bulbs behind the dashboard panel?

Advertising

MessageAuthor

My S40 dashboard panel is fitted with a "trip computer" that show average speed, average mpg, outside temp, engine and oil temp etc. It is on the right of the dashboard panel right next to the speedometer. Recently the light behind the trip computer has gone and I cannot see the information at night. The bulbs behind the speedometer and revmeter are still OK. All those bulbs are lighted as soon as the key is turned (not linked to the headlights). Do you know if it is possible to renew the failed bulb? I know how to take off the dashboard panel from the car but I don't know if it's possible to replace any bulb inside it. Sounds like a sealed unit and the bulbs look like leds, right??? Any information about that? Also does anyone have a part nr for this bulb??? Thanks a lot

Thanks for the link. However it seems this process is for the heater control bulb and I'm not sure it does concern the bulb behind the speedometer unit (may have not correctly understood the content of what mhariso explained). At the back of the speedometer unit there is just connectors to plug in but I can't see a bulb there. Is there a way to open the speedometer unit and dismantle it to access the failed bulb?? The failed bulb is the one that light the trip computer (right of the speedometer).

I'm not sure about the S/V40 dashboard lights but I do know that on the 480 info center there is a halogen bulb, yes halogen, that can be replaced. Be warned, it's about 15 Euro/10 GBP from the main dealer or a good motor factors may have one. Sorry, I don't know the part number but I believe it's an Osram bulb. Good luck...

RE: How to change the bulbs behind the dashboard panel?

you need to remove your combi meter , to do this you will need to: drop the plastic lower dash panel, x 3 sscrews (under the steering column) drop the steering column upper x2 mount bolts (accessibe through the steering column lower shroud) remove the combi meter surround, x2 screws from underside into upper edge of dash above dash meters.....then pull forward,i.e. toward you as you sit in the drivers eat remove the combi meter, to do this a straight pull toward you, don't go crazy here, smooth.... then as the meter disconnects you will be able to pull it out... on the rear are many bulbs, many have bulb holders (plastic bases, find which has blown (visual insect for filament wire broken), then go to auto sho and look for equivalent, if you goto volvo for them the price will be about 4 times that of the auto store as they will supply you with the bulb holder also.. not necessary... check all bulbs while you have it out, some warning lamps may have gone too.... Hope this helps.... Else get a haynes manual it is shown clearly in there...

Thanks mharisso! I have the Haynes manual and it shows how to remove the unit. I already did this once to clean it but as far as I remember I couldn't access any bulb from behind. Will try to remove it another time and change that failed bulb. Thanks for the help!!

no worries kilou When you look at the back of the combi unit unit you will se lots of little plastic bulb holders.... hexgonal in shape, (some may be square).. twist these counterclockwise carefully and the little bulbs and holder come out.. then grab the bulb and gently pull directly out of the hoder... do not twist... the bulb should pop out... from memoey they are generally either 1.2 watt, 1.5 watt or 3 watt... The 1.2. and 1.5 make up the bulk of the warning and signal lamps when lit there seems little difference in the illumination level of these.. , with the 3watt ones used to light the needles on the dials...these are obviously a fair bit brighter...
