Will PT 6 optimize the dual processing in the G4's? I've heard different things. Thank you

RE: PT 6 Dual Processing

mix and dsp operations on cpu1 screen redraws and disk i/o operations on cpu2. It will "use" both cpus..but I wouldn't call that optimized. That would come later I think. The current mix and dsp limit on a cpu for PT is 85% (leaving 15% for screen redraws and disk operations). Now, this will be 100% of first cpu for mix and dsp (a gain of 15%) And an enormous gain for the screen redraws and disk operations being run on the 2nd cpu. I never thought PT was sloggy GUI anyway..but this should keep things on your screen "snappy" under heavier loads. It will also probalby put an end to those BTD errors..etc. Overall...it should make for a nice speed bump for dual cpu users.

RE: PT 6 Dual Processing

dcornutt, OS X's symmetric multi-processing means that applications do not have to be optimized to take advantage of a 2nd (or more) CPUs. The OS "sees" the multi-processors as one CPU. Also, graphics elements in PT are handled by OS X's Quartz graphics engine. All these calls are processed by the co-processor on the graphics card.

RE: PT 6 Dual Processing

thanks for the additional info. If PT 5.1 was multi threaded..it would be utilizing both cpus on my dual 800 right now..it compleltely ignores the 2nd cpu. OS 9 is capable of utiltizing both cpu's for multithreaded apps. (although not as efficiently as OS X). Like I said before..that info was from a Digi rep post here on these boards. DSP and Mix operations off 1 cpu. Screen redraws and disk operations off the other. this was posted by Digi in a thread a few months back. They hope to optimize it further down the road. If what your saying is correct...then lets say you have a huge number of tracks and mix autoamtion..etc. which took up a large chunk of one available cpu. YOu then initiated several plugins (dsp operations) that went beyond the cpu avaiable left on the cpu the mix was initiated on. Your saying..this dsp thread..when initiated would then..move to the 2nd cpu when it's started..where there is room for it to go. I'm saying...you'll get an out of cpu error...in Protools because that thread cannot initiate in the same cpu as the mix ops...ie..they won't initiate on seperate cpus...(which ever they start on...they stay togehter). Guess we'll have to wait and see

DSP and Mix operations are handled by the TDM cards. Maybe you were thinking of LE? This is the TDM forum.

RE: PT 6 Dual Processing

Yes it's true..OS X can do that. It's also true you can prioritize theads to one cpu or the other for any application running on it....to one cpu or another. I took the info about the cpu loads..etc..direct from a digi post...here on the forum as to how it was done in PT6 and what to expect performance wise. And..they also mentioned that more tweaks to this would come later...improving performance along the way. I'm not making it up.
