Havejust purchased a 1993 960 3.0 24v. The car has a full history up to 79,000m and underwent an oil change at 98,000. and passed it's MOT 600 miles ago. Is there anything I should get checked which may be due, timing belt??, cooling system etc. All appears well and car drives A1. Any help to a rookie would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks.

Hi, Welcome to the forums and enjoy your stay here.. Enjoy your new Volvo too, sounds a good one.. :) I would check through the service records to find out if/when the cam belt was changed. As a matter of course, with a new car, I would change the plugs, coolant and oil & filter. May also be worth considering the gearbox oil, diff oil. There is another thread in this section about gearbox oil and what to use. Another on coolant. Read both! It may be worth considering a change to full synth for both diff and gearbox. Possibly also for the engine. If you can use de-ionised water and a decent coolant for the engine and give a good flush. Check all your electrics, doors windows, sunroof etc and give a good clean and polish.. :) Des. . . ;)

Hi Foxache As Des says - sounds like you might have a good'n there. I agree with everything Des says about what you need to think about doing. Regarding the cambelt, if the service history you've got goes up to 79,000 miles (which hopefully includes the 80,000 mile service?) then the first cambelt change should be on it. I know that cambelt change intervals increased with later cars and I can't remember offhand what interval is recommended for yours, but in any case the belt should have been changed at 80,000 miles at the very latest. The real point I wanted to make, though, is this - as and when you do come to change the cambelt, with the engine now over the 100,000 mile mark, you should also renew the cambelt tensioner and idler pulleys at the same time, because there have been cases of these failing at higher mileages and this failure does, of course, rather nullify the advantage of properly maintaining the belt! Regards, StanC

Just to agree again with you, Des - although I mention 80,000 miles as being the recommended cambelt interval for late 960's I never leave it anything like that long for my 1996 motor. The consequenses of a failed belt are too awful to contemplate so I usually also change mine every 40,000 to 50,000 miles. StanC
