RE: Looking for a new multitrack recording software...
Probably the wrong place to ask - a Reaper forum, chances are the recommendation will be Reaper ;-) But as mentioned before, try it out for yourself as only you can decide if it suits you. BTW Yes it will do most of what you described and as previously mentioned you will probably want an external editor.

He said he was an Acid user. For Acid and Vegas users, its kind of a no brainer to get up and running fast in reaper

Dr. Avery, no software is perfect, but Reaper should definitely be in your 'to try' list. It's small (in filesize, no bloat), fast, very well coded and highly reliable. It has tons of features, in some respects it is well suited for highly professional tasks. It's under constant development, new versions come out as often as every couple of weeks. Serious bugs get squashed fast. New features get added constantly. You will need to dig in and invest some time learning the software, but the manual is excellent, the forum is active and the people in here are very helpful. Invest some time with the trial version and find out for yourself. It's full featured, no restrictions. Reaper IS a good avenue to explore.

It took me a while to customize Reaper to my needs, which sound a lot like yours. Key commands are called actions, def download SWS extensions, which add a ton of more key options. It will take a while, but you will work much more quickly, because you make the software be whatever you want it to be. Make sure to try different themes (skins) - this was huge for me - I love RADO_sand oxo theme, very easy on the eyes.

super customizable with look and functions ripple editing (which is great for voice over stuff) free mp3 export (just download Lame.dll) plays almost any type of file, mix within a session without convert (PT 10 just now got this) records direct to compressed file formats Item volume editing (PT 10 just jacked this feature) super efficient (best on windows) great community and forum business philosophy (anyone can write plug ins or features for reaper and share with the forums) plus very cheap and great value!!!
