i would say for the least amount of hassle and for the best stability of your system use only very well established developers plugs and stay away from synthedit/synthmaker stuff - it will just make life easier for you. well established developers with some excellent freeware: Kjaerhus Audio - classic series Jeroen Breebaart - all his free stuff plugs are excellent Voxengo - lots of excellent free plugs Blue Cat Audio - lots of great stuff there too Ohmforce - frohmage filter Digital Fish Phones - blockfish, spitfish and floorfish ...and of course REAplugs! softsynths that are both very stable and very easy to use (and therefore good for educational purposes) would be: synth1 linplug free alpha there are plenty of excellent patches about on the web for both.
--------------------- White is Right, Steel Grey is OK, but Estoril is the only color that truly matters. I like Coupes.
I second the Mcompressor by Melda Production, it has an easy to see and understand graphic interface for beginners. For EQ I would suggest a VST 31 band graphic eq in addition to the full parametric. Examples: EQ 31 (on the top left) Another freebie Not a VST plugin but worth mentioning is the simple feedback trainer (but watch the volume!)
